Lao Tzu, a Chinese philosopher stated that, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Not only is this a simple statement of fact, it is also a powerful metaphor which can be applied to so many different situations in our lives. Each time there is a task before us which feels like a mountain to be climbed, this can be applied and that single step taken.
Setting Goals To Keep You On Track
When we embark on a journey, we are encouraged to make a start, even when we can’t physically see the end goal, the finish line, or the completed project. I use the phrase, “embark on a journey”, loosely. What I mean is taking on a challenge of some magnitude, for example getting married, starting a family, undertaking a course, running a marathon, or starting your own online business from scratch. Generally the journey or challenge consists of a goal to be aimed for and achieved with some intentions being finite while some are more fluid. If you are lucky there will be a framework or road map for you to follow, allowing you to set SMART goals to keep you on track.
For example, running a marathon literally starts with a single step and it is widely accepted that following a training plan, where you can build up your distance and endurance, setting smaller goals, allowing you to check your progress as the weeks and months progress, is the most likely way for you to succeed in being able to stay the full distance. Using a tried and tested plan, where you are choosing a path others have travelled before you, allowing you to learn from their experience. These people can guide and mentor you to reach your destination and hold you accountable to pre-agreed milestones along the way. For others pursuing a different goal, the pathway will be one less trodden. There will be pioneers, explorers and trailblazers among us who want to choose their own way and perhaps become a guide for others.
Regardless of whether you are a leader or a follower, the real key to happiness and success is to take that first, single step and enjoy the journey along the way.
In reality, life rarely is plain sailing. Having been married now for 28 years and with two grown up children, as partners/spouses and parents we learn so much on that journey as we go along. Did we really know what we had in front of us when we set out? Could we see the entire path ahead all the way to the end? Or, did we set out in our youthful naivety, in blind faith that all would be rosey in the garden of life, learning to deal with whatever situation life threw at us as it came along, good and bad – becoming wiser with each passing day.
When A New Opportunity Presents Itself
Every now and then in life a new opportunity presents itself to us. There are different schools of thought as to why these opportunities appear to us when they do. Is it because we have attracted them through our thoughts, words and actions? Is it because we have unwittingly surrounded ourselves with people who stretch and challenge us to improve and grow? It is perceived that we become the average of the 5 people we spend most time with, so we should choose our “tribe” wisely. Or, do opportunities simply appear by coincidence or luck? People have very different opinions on this. Personally, I think everything happens for a reason. So, when I stumbled upon an opportunity to build my own digital business alongside my current job, I thought “Here we go. Here it is! This is my chance to do something I really enjoy and where I can make a positive difference to people’s lives. ”
I can remember the butterflies in my stomach that night when the ad appeared on YouTube and I didn’t click the “Skip Ad” button. Instead I chose to continue watching and there it was – the answer to my prayers, intentions and a way to finally turn those dreams into reality. I felt excited and terrified in equal measure but I jumped in, with no hesitation, I entered my name and email address to get the free video workshop series. I then registered for the All In Webinar and that was it. With little or no experience of building a digital online business and without any real clue as to what it would entail. I didn’t tell a soul for at least 2 weeks, frightened that those with well-meaning opinions might dent my excitement and enthusiasm. In the past, I have been guilty of allowing Other People’s Opinions To Matter Too Much to me. Now, I want to tell the world how you can get started too!
When being offered a new opportunity, Richard Branson, says “Say yes first, then figure out how, later.” That is pretty much what I did and I have never looked back. I plugged into the educational platform and the community for support, and began the exciting challenge of building my own online digital business, learning how to build my own website and market to like-minded individuals, whilst developing my mindset and other necessary skills.
What’s Stopping You From Taking That First Step?
So my question to you is, what is stopping you from taking that first step towards creating the life you really want? This will mean different things to different people: it might be about financial growth or building real wealth, for some it will be time freedom to spend with family or travelling the world, and for others it will be the need to lead a life of giving, of having a purpose and fulfilment, or the ability to work flexibly from any geographical location with a wifi connection. Different people are driven by different needs or wants depending on the individual’s personal circumstances. These motivators can be discovered by tapping into Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.
So, if you get the Sunday night dread, which for some might actually start much earlier on a Sunday, knowing what’s ahead the following day, or it could be the desire to escape the lengthy commute to work, missing your kid’s bedtime or perhaps you have just reached the point in life where you are asking yourself, “Is this it?” If you are at a point in your career where you are starting to think about your Retirement and what that might look like for you, you may be thinking, “If I don’t do something soon, it’s going to be too late for me….” For others, you may be looking at the career path ahead and thinking “I don’t want to be that person in 15 years”. Now is the time to take that first step.
None of us are getting out of this life alive so why not aim for something that lights your fire and makes you want to jump out of bed in the morning. It is never too late to try something new and the beginning of a new year is the perfect time to embark on a new adventure.
I realise that many of us may feel bound by everyday financial trappings like mortgages, car loans, school or university fees or consumer debt and meantime, trying to maintain a standard of living that our spouses and family expect, but there is another solution!
The Digital World Is Evolving And Growing Everyday
The digital world is evolving and growing everyday, opening up new opportunities for us and we can embrace and harness its power enabling us to create the life of our dreams alongside our current commitments. We just have to set the intention, commit to it and then take action.
To sign off I’d like to share one of my mantras which is a quote by Jim Rohn,
“I will climb this mountain. They told me it is too high, too far, too steep, too rocky, and too difficult. But it’s my mountain. I will climb it and you will soon see me waving from the top or dead on the side from trying.”
Let me help you take that first single step on your journey with The Digital Infinity Lifestyle.
